Kicking Off the Peer Review of an International Bottom-Up Energy Model— Buenas: Your Expertise Is Needed!

Moderators: Anita Eide and Frank Klinckenberg, CLASP

We are seeking your expertise to review the assumptions and input data of a bottom-up energy model developed by LBNL for Collaborative Labeling and Appliance Standards Program (CLASP) - BUENAS. The model estimates energy consumption and savings and the methodology, detailing assumptions and parameters used, will be presented using a transparent version of the model. Documentation will be provided to allow for a comprehensive review. BUENAS (Bottom Up Energy Analysis System) estimates the global potential for energy savings and CO2 emission reductions in major economies. It is limited in scope to efficiency standards and labeling policies (S&L) for appliances and equipment. It uses detailed forecasts of sales data for specific products or where not available relies on macroeconomic drivers to predict future penetration of efficient appliances using an econometric diffusion model. In order to determine feasible targets for standards, the model makes reference to current standards and planned policies in each market, incorporating these as high efficiency scenarios, or suggesting potential for further improvement—such as planned targets and timelines from CNIS in China, Ecodesign in the European Union, and DoE appliance standards in the United States. A ClimateWorks Foundation global Best Practice Network (BPN), CLASP is a leading international resource on S&L for major appliances, equipment and lighting products. CLASP organizes teams of local and international experts to provide best practice technical advice on S&L policies to governments and agencies working to develop them. For more information about this special session please contact Anita Eide at aeide@clasponline.org.
