Focus for 2019

Informing Innovation: Research and Evaluation in a Changing Energy Landscape

The 2019 IEPEC Planning Committee is seeking abstracts on a wide range of energy evaluation topics. Abstracts are invited for three presentation formats: papers, panels, and posters. We are also seeking proposals for full- or half-day pre-conference evaluation training workshops.

The energy industry is in the midst of a dramatic shift, which is affecting utility business models, grid resources, energy program technologies, program design and delivery, planning and forecasting. Energy program evaluation plays a critical role in informing the innovations. Research is an important component. Energy efficiency, demand response, distributed energy resources, and renewables are growing portions of energy procurements and non-wires alternatives are becoming more prominent components of the grid infrastructure. Planning efforts are increasingly incorporating these changes. Evaluations and assessments of current and past initiatives will help inform future innovations in our industry and enable us to face challenges, adapt and add value. Key current and emerging issues include:

  • Distributed Resources: integrating evaluation, and adapting to new opportunities
  • Time & Location: grid impacts, load shapes, and price signals to understand value
  • Actionable Intelligence: embedded EM&V, and program design for faster feedback
  • Data and Applications: leveraging big data, using data science to support evolution of methods

We encourage submissions that inform innovation by addressing the themes identified above, but also recognize that innovation is happening across the evaluation spectrum. The examples of several other topics listed below are also relevant. We accept papers, posters and panel ideas from across the market sectors (e.g., residential, commercial, industrial) as well as any type of analysis (e.g., financial or feasibility assessments, impact evaluations, process reviews market studies or other). Given the changing landscape, we welcome suggestions for topics that may not have made this list.
